RE: Firearms & the Class A

Magicbus, probably everyone from the South got it. I was 40 years old before I found out it wasn't against the law not to have a cane pole sticking out of your car window.

RE: Reg MH in another state

How huge is huge.... The registration would be $1500/yr! If the state pursues criminal charges, it could be a felony. You'll pay three times that for the lawyer + fines & penalties.

RE: Reg MH in another state

A search on the subject will give you a plethora of information...probably more than you will ever use. It comes up about 2 or 3 times a week. Remember, if you live in California and register it anywhere, you risk the possibility of civil AND criminal penalties. It may not happen, but it's possible.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

I do pull a toad, but still I travel with a nagging fear of being thrown in jail for catnip possession, the cats executed in a shelter, and the state selling my mh.... That ain't gonna happen. I'd worry about the cats and their addiction to catnip getting out of hand. There's nothing worse than having to put the cats in rehab.

Betting this topic goes at least 8 pages. At least everyone is being civil.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

KLO, they can only search your MH with permission or with probable cause that you are committing a crime or have committed a crime. If they search your MH, with permission or otherwise, they can search the safe. However, as a "senior" couple, I seriously doubt that you'll be targeted as being involved in drugs. MH searches are not nearly as common as this thread might indicate except at border crossings and critical installations like military posts, large dams, etc. and even then, it is frequently only a cursory search or a walk-through. Having said that, the safe notwithstanding, it may not be prudent to carry large sums of money.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

If you have nothing to hide, let them in. If you have something to hide, refuse entry and get out of town. .....and hope whatever it is you're hiding isn't so obvious that they'll have probable cause and won't need your permission to search.

RE: Speakeasy Speed Test?

I haven't used Speakeasy lately but a year or so ago, I compared several speed tests, including Speakeasy, and they were all pretty close. I don't think it included Google, however.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

There are 51 answers to that question.. The fifty depend on what state you are in... The ONE is "Ask a legal professional" (Lawyer) You're absolute right. But make sure you get a criminal lawyer (aren't they all). Lawyers specializing in civil matters are notoriously uninformed about many criminal matters, and vice versa. The one problem is: A Georgia lawyer won't know diddly about the laws in other states and (again) vice versa. You're also right about having so many answers. The one saving grace is the fact that it's a Constitutional issue and the U.S. Supreme Court has "standardized," in a manner of speaking, most of the applicable legal principles that apply. There are still variables in every state and that's what'll get you.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

Golden_HVAC, the S&W bumper sticker isn't probable cause. A word to everyone: Once the officer gives you back your documents (license, registration, etc.), you're free to drive away. The traffic stop is over. He may talk about the weather, ask how much the upkeep is on your rig or if you have any drugs and can he search. That's small talk and you can leave. Remember, there's a pretty good chance the traffic stop is being videotaped. Those can be used in court either against you or against the officer if he does anything improper. Only rarely does the officer himself have access to the tape, however. Those tapes are used as evidence in court all the time. If, for any reason, the MH is towed by the police, it will be searched. It's an inventory to protect both you and the officer and it's allowed by the Fourth Amendment as long as it's the standard policy of the police department. They can't just inventory some of them. It's all or nothing. It's important that everyone understand that this subject is an almost completely gray area. There is no "bright line" as the courts call it. There will be unusual examples of searches that seemed improper but were allowed. On the other hand, there will be searches that seemed completely routine but were thrown out. There would be a legal reason for both.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

There's no "yes" or "no" answer. If the officer has permission, there are no Fourth Amendment implications. If he doesn't have permission, he must have either a warrant or "reasonable suspicion" that a crime has been committed, is being committed or is going to be committed. The MH has wheels so the "automobile exception" to the Fourth Amendment applies. That simply means if he leaves to get a warrant, whatever evidence or fruits of the crime that may be contained in the vehicle will be gone when he returns. The officer can't use "gut feelings." He must be able to articulate in court what he did what he did. He can't assume that all MHs have weapons in them. The courts have also generally held that the smell of marijuana allows a warrantless search. The officer must be able to articulate how his "knowledge, training and experience" helped him to be able to determine that what he smelled was marijuana. A "hit" by a properly certified canine generally allows a warrantles search also. (In Europe, some countries use pigs for drug detection.) There are no black or white answers. The courts will look at the "totality of the circumstances" in making their determination as to whether the search was legitimate. Incidentally, before I retired, I taught search and seizure for 20 years. However, I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. They wouldn't let me be a lawyer. My parents were married. (If you're a lawyer, that's a joke. Any resemblence to any lawyer, living or dead, is coincidental.)

RE: StreetAtlas or Streets and Trips?

I use both. Like they said, they frequently give different routes. Part of the fun of planning is to look at both and play around with them to get the route you want. They both have their quirks and there are errors in both. In terms of quality, they're about the same as far as I'm concerned. The difference is in the way they operate.

There's a web site that calls itself the "Official Homepage" of the "Geo Method." It's got some pretty good information.

RE: Stabil or fill it up?

Both. I'm in Georgia and I don't normally winterize but if I'm not going to use it for the next 45 days or so, go to the service station, add the Stabil then fill up the tank. When I leave, I crank up the generator. The drive home assures me that the Stabil has mixed with the fuel and has made it all the way through the system. Incidentally, it's a Fleetwood, 80 gallon tank.

RE: Does the problems ever stop???

Like they said earlier, you should be something of a handyman (person) to own a motorhome. You don't have to have a PhD from Prevost University but you should have some basic mechanical and electrical knowledge. There are a lot of things most people can't fix (generator voltage regulators, AC compressors, etc.) but there is an abundance of things that are handman-friendly. There's a lot of literature and a variety of web sites available to help. Find 'em. I learned early on to accept the fact that things go wrong. Now, it's part of the allure of owning a motorhome to go through and put things back in shape.

Ferlin Husky had "Lookin' At The World Through a Windshield." Sammie Haynes had one called "The Windshield Wiper Song." It was a children's song. I've got grandkids so I know these things. Next:B

RE: Another new GPS

I hadn't noticed the date before I made the original post. I have to assume it didn't turn out to be one of the big sellers if they've been out a year and this is the first I've heard of them. I imagine close-out prices are pretty low but I wouldn't count on any kind of customer service.
